Goals/Course Description:
Evolution of Jazz is
a depth course
which concentrates on a specific repertoire of music, namely, that of the
American jazz tradition. Jazz is a form of music firmly rooted in the oral (and
aural) tradition. To really get into the music, then, an emphasis must be
placed on active, concentrated listening. This course's focus on the stylistic
traits of outstanding jazz musicians synthesizes the development of listening
skills and the understanding of the nature and evolution of jazz.
