Goals/Course Description:

Bennett Reimer states that, in art, the more one perceives, the more one feels. It would stand to reason that the most effective way to promote the growth of the education of feeling (one-third of our being!) is to become better perceivers. It is hoped that this course will enable students to become better perceivers (listeners) through exposure to the elements that compose music.

These musical elements will be examined through their use in representative works of Western art music. Important composers and stylistic developments will also be highlighted. Above all, an emphasis will be placed on active, concentrated listening so the student can use the skills and information learned in this course throughout his or her life.
