INART 1 THE ARTS
TOM SMIALEK
PERCEPTION
To become more effective perceivers of art,
it is necessary to develop practical experience that cannot be duplicated in a
classroom. Attendance at a "live" concert, film screening, or art
exhibition provides an experience that utilizes the skill and knowledge gained
from this course.
A brief
report is to be submitted to evaluate students’ progress in the development
of perception skills and the verbalization of concepts learned. (The use of
writing, speaking and other forms of self-expression comprise one of the five active learning elements
to be integrated into all General Education
courses, as mandated by the University Faculty Senate in 1998.) Acceptable
events include: visual art exhibits, concerts, operas, theatre productions,
dance performances, or film screenings. Events must employ art forms of a
"serious" nature (versus those that are a part of our
"popular" culture).
Performing arts events must be presented
by professional or collegiate-level performers. No amateur or high school
performances will be considered for this project.
To aid in the completion of this assignment,
museum and concert field trips
will be scheduled. Those not able to attend these trips will be responsible for
arranging to attend a fine arts event on their own, with prior approval of the
instructor. A good source of upcoming local arts events is the entertainment
calendar on the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader’s Website (See More Local Entertainment at the bottom of the page, especially the links for
Concerts, Exhibits, and Music): http://www.timesleader.com/mld/timesleader/entertainment/.
