GROUP
PROJECT OVERVIEW

Objectives:
- to reinforce/internalize understanding of
concepts introduced in class
- to apply what is learned in class to new
situations
- to develop critical thinking and decision-making
skills
- to build teamwork skills (being open to divergent
views, consensus building, delegating tasks)
- to explore connections between various art forms
Art forms:
- music, painting, sculpture, architecture, film
Groups:
Complete survey to assess
preferred art forms and role in the group
During one class meeting,
students will caucus by preferred art form, combine into groups and select
their group roles
Every group has three to
four members, each with a specific, defined role:
- Coordinator – organizes groups’ meetings; ensures
fair division of labor; keeps projects on task and on time; facilitates
consensus among group members in evaluating examples
- Technical support – prepares sound clips, image
files or URL lists; assists other group members with example search and
preparation; assist presenter during presentation of examples
- Recorder – takes notes during group analysis of
examples; collates, prepares, and submits supporting statements for
examples on presentation day
- Presenter – presents examples to class and
provides rationale to support group’s choice of examples; fields follow-up
questions from instructor and/or class members
Method:
Groups meet briefly to
coordinate activities, decide division of labor, brainstorm ideas
Do individual searches (or
work in group), collect examples (download images, record URLs, record CD or
cassette tracks, or record video tape timings)
Groups meet again before
class presentation to assess examples gathered, decide which to present,
justify choices, prepare examples (make/cue tape or CD list, copy/sort images
on floppy disk, collate (and check!) list of URLs for images, assemble edit
film clips on a blank tape -- or bring in individual tapes, cued)
Turn in examples to me
during the afternoon before the due date
- art projects - submit URLs for images by e-mail (or
an attached MS Word document), organized and labeled by topic (or copy
files to a Zip disk and submit to me one day in advance of the due date)
- music - submit list of tracks/timings of examples
from Music Example Bank by e-mail, on a cassette tape with dubs, or CDs
with list of tracks/timings of examples (burn clips on a single CD-R or
bring all the audio CDs with list)
- film - submit tape with clips
Come early on the day of the
group’s presentation to load images, organize presentation, etc.

Music: Music Example Bank CD
set (on reserve at Main Desk in Library under INART 1) - this set has the best
selection of choices for all elements; You can also search for examples from
your own collections or download mp3s from WWW.
Painting, Sculpture,
Architecture: Surf art, sculpture,
architecture websites; scan from art books
Film: Library collection,
your own collection
Assessment criteria:
- examples rated (yes/maybe/no) as to
effectiveness; partial credit for explanation during presentation
- quality of presentation, written supporting
documents
- attendance - all members must be in class on day
of presentation
- penalties for late submission of examples or for
not being prepared to present on assigned day
- group members assess each other’s effectiveness
at end of semester
criteria: timeliness/accessibility, keeps appointments, effective,
contributes, cooperates
